The University of Lincoln Offers a Truly Life Changing Experience
Alumna Kamila shares the story of time at the University of Lincoln, which saw her graduate with First-class degrees in Business and Marketing and Management.
“Over 15 years ago, when I took a gap year from an average university in Poland – where I studied Biology and Ecology of the Sea, I never imagined I would go onto study in the heart of a historic city and graduate with first-class degrees in Business and Marketing BA (Hons) and Management (MSc) at Lincoln Cathedral.
“In 2006, I arrived at the Victoria Station in London with a small amount of luggage, a positive attitude, and a vision to learn English and obtain a degree from one of the best Universities in the UK.
“Before my dream came true, life wasn’t easy. I was unable to speak English, I was low paid and undervalued. This was frustrating for a high achiever like myself – I needed a change!
“When I was offered a place at the University of Lincoln to study Business and Marketing, I suddenly had to learn to balance study, work, and life with a young family. Three years later I walked away with a first-class degree, Certificate of Commendation, Top Five Academic Achievement and Award for Best Student in the Strategy, Communications and Culture in European Business Module.
“I successfully secured a graduate internship at a local tech company and was promoted to managerial level. To be fair at that point I wasn’t considering further study, at least not for some time. My initial aim was to concentrate on my young family and enjoy life, at least until the day was invited to attend a Master’s degree taster day!
“So, two years later I was back again, sitting in one of the University’s remarkable lecture theatres listening to a taster lecture. At that moment in time, I realised how much I’d missed the University of Lincoln experience, how much I want to go back listen to their expert staff, use their modern facilities, and benefit from their well-structured and well-delivered study once again.
“All of a sudden new career aspirations were born, and I knew I not only wanted to be back at Lincoln, but I also needed it with all my heart!
“In 2019 I graduated with an MSc in Management. I still remember those disturbed nights when writing essays, reports and preparing for group or individual presentations. I still feel ‘the joy’ of long hours spent at the University’s library siting in front of my laptop red-hot from searching through their impressive database of e-books, journals, and articles – but it was all worth it!
“Today, I’m a General Manager at a local tech company, I run my own marketing consultancy firm, I’m a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and I’m working towards publishing my first book about branding. I’m also currently working on a new and exciting venture, which I cannot yet say anything about.
“The University of Lincoln experience and qualifications have changed my life!”
Professional upgrade
“Postgraduate study at the University of Lincoln not only helps you further upgrade your career and develop your knowledge, but it can also help you prepare to start your own business; I call it an investment!”
Personal boost
“Employers are increasingly looking for individuals who can make a difference in today’s global workplace. To make the difference you need the right knowledge, skills, and attributes. For me postgraduate study was also about personal development. It not only gave me a confidence boost and improved my communication skills but most importantly it transformed the way I see my future. It really was an eye-opening experience!”
Difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations!
“My journey was several years long, and it was difficult at times. It required commitment and sacrifice. The University of Lincoln truly places the quality of the student experience at the heart of everything it does. I never felt like I was fighting for a better future alone.
“I had an army of ready-to-help University staff at my side: the lecturers and their assistants, administration and IT support staff, librarians and dyslexia support staff, and of course my family. None of this would have been possible without the support of my husband and the motivation I received from my children – I call it a teamwork!”
Advice
“If I can provide a piece of advice, I would say: analyse where you are now, where you want to be in the future, and find a way of getting there.
“Be ambitious, stay focused and never give up. Build relationships with people, this helps in business, and it helps in life. Be grateful of what you have now but always aim for more.
“Studying at the postgraduate level is not an easy task but as Nelson Mandela said: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world.’
“The University of Lincoln has changed my world and I believe it will change yours too! It is the investment which continues bringing the important benefits!”
