Education Isn’t Always a Straight Path

Education doesn’t always follow a straight path, and my journey certainly took its share of unexpected turns. Despite being a hardworking student, I never quite reached the heights I had hoped for. In 2020, I was on the brink of starting university, eagerly preparing for my A-level and weighing my options for the next chapter. However, the world had other plans. COVID-19 struck, and everything changed. Lockdowns were enforced, and I received the news that my A-level exams were cancelled. Instead, I would be assessed based on my past coursework. This shift left me with grades that didn’t quite reflect my capabilities and shattered my plans for university.

Amidst this uncertainty, The University of Lincoln reached out with a lifeline. They offered me a chance to study with them by completing a CertHE in my first year, tailored for students who hadn’t achieved their desired results. I was grateful for the opportunity, especially during such tumultuous times. Despite the challenges of lockdowns and online learning, I discovered that I could adapt well to Lincoln’s different approach to education.

My first year at Lincoln was a period of growth and adjustment. Despite the disruptions caused by the pandemic, I managed to achieve a First and earn my CertHE qualification, allowing me to progress to the second year of my degree. This milestone also presented me with the opportunity to study abroad, something I had always aspired to.

As the world began to slowly return to normality in my second year, I immersed myself in university life, joining the Futsal team and expanding my social circle. The option to study abroad for a semester was a long-waited opportunity. Although some countries still had travel restrictions, I was fortunate enough to be accepted by Drury University in Missouri, USA. I chose to study there for the semester, experiencing a new culture and meeting incredible people from diverse backgrounds.

Living and studying in a different country was eye-opening. I roomed with a Polish Olympian, learned Spanish from a Panamanian, and navigated cultural differences that enriched my perspective on the world. Returning to the UK for my final year, I faced the challenge of balancing job applications with my studies. It was a hectic time, with countless applications and late nights completing assignments, but I managed to graduate with First Class Honours.

Securing a graduate position at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners has been a significant achievement for me. Since September, I have been thoroughly enjoying my first rotation and am deeply grateful for the opportunities that The University of Lincoln has provided me. The initial support I received from the university during the uncertainties of COVID-19, coupled with ongoing encouragement and guidance throughout my academic journey, has played a pivotal role in shaping me into the person I am today. I will always be thankful to Lincoln for their instrumental role in my development.
