What are you doing now you have graduated from the University of Lincoln?: 

Since graduating from the University of Lincoln, I have advanced to the role of Senior Security Technical Specialist at Microsoft UK. In this position, I focus on presenting the value of Microsoft Security Solutions to our customers, advising them on cyber security, and assisting them in achieving efficiency and effectiveness in their cyber security measures. Additionally, I lead the UK Security Technical Community, fostering a collaborative environment among professionals in the field. Throughout my six-year tenure at Microsoft, I have been promoted twice, reflecting my commitment and contributions to the company. Besides my primary role, I am also proud to run the UK Dads at Microsoft community, a resource group and support network dedicated to working fathers.

Although my academic background in Forensic Science did not directly involve IT or Security, the analytical and critical thinking skills I honed during my studies at the University of Lincoln have been invaluable in my career. These skills have enabled me to navigate complex security challenges and deliver impactful solutions to our clients. Looking ahead, my goal is to become a Cyber Security Advisor, akin to a virtual Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), and to establish myself as a technical leader within the field of Cyber Security.

How did your time at the University of Lincoln support your career?: 

My time at the University of Lincoln played a pivotal role in shaping my career path and developing essential skills that have been instrumental in my professional journey. One of the most impactful courses I took was the “Introduction to Digital Forensics.” This short module sparked my interest in digital security and set me on a path that led to my subsequent degree and ultimately my career in cyber security. Beyond academics, my involvement in extracurricular activities significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth.

As a member of the University Kick Boxing and Kung Fu team, I not only developed physical discipline but also cultivated a strong sense of resilience and perseverance. These qualities have been invaluable in my career. Additionally, my work at the Engine Shed during my second and third years provided me with a steady income and a unique opportunity to be a part of the core student culture at Lincoln. Although my part-time work was not facilitated directly by the university, the support and encouragement I received from my lecturers were crucial. I developed a strong working relationship with one of my lecturers, who played a key role in guiding me towards my Master’s degree, even though it was pursued at a different university.

The University of Lincoln also helped me refine my critical thinking and analytical skills, which have been fundamental in my role as a Senior Security Technical Specialist at Microsoft. These skills have enabled me to approach complex security challenges with a clear and logical mindset. While networking was not a primary focus during my undergraduate degree and I initially struggled with it, my first ‘real’ job provided the necessary experience to master this crucial skill. Overall, my time at the University of Lincoln equipped me with a solid foundation and the confidence to pursue and excel in my career.

What are the best parts of your job?: 

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role as a Senior Security Technical Specialist at Microsoft UK is the opportunity to engage with customers and help them achieve more secure operations. I thrive on the variety that each day brings, as no two days are the same. This constant interaction with diverse clients keeps my work dynamic and exciting. The impact of my work extends beyond individual clients; by enhancing their security measures, I contribute to creating a safer digital environment overall.

Additionally, I take immense pride in leading the Dads at Microsoft community, an employee resource group dedicated to supporting working fathers. This role allows me to make a positive impact on my colleagues’ work-life balance and well-being. Working in such a collaborative team is another highlight of my job. The inclusive culture at Microsoft fosters a sense of belonging and drives us to make a positive impact. The company’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity resonates deeply with me, making it a great place to work.

If you could give our current students any top tip for after graduation and their careers, what would it be?: 

My top tip for current students is to remember that your degree does not define you. While it provides a foundation, your career path can take many directions, and it’s important to remain open to various opportunities and experiences.

Don’t neglect the communities and skills you developed during your time at university. These can be invaluable as you transition into your professional life. The connections you made and the soft skills you honed will continue to serve you well.

One of the biggest challenges I faced after graduation was gaining relevant experience. To overcome this, actively seek out internships and apprenticeships, even if they are brief. These opportunities can provide crucial hands-on experience and make you more competitive in the job market.

Never stop learning. Make it a habit to read about topics that interest you and stay updated with industry trends. Utilise tools like Blinkist to digest complex and lengthy topics quickly, ensuring that you can continuously expand your knowledge base.

Networking is another key component of career success. It has been instrumental in my career progression, often opening doors to opportunities that are not advertised on job sites. Building and maintaining a professional network can introduce you to potential employers and colleagues who can support your career growth.

What inspired you to study at the University of Lincoln (or one of its predecessor institutions)?: 

What initially drew me to the University of Lincoln was its location. Unlike other universities I explored, Lincoln offered a compact and accessible environment where everything was on your doorstep. The sense of safety and security in the city was very appealing, and I was so enamoured with Lincoln that I decided to stay even after graduating. While I didn’t focus heavily on university rankings, I did look into the top institutions for Forensic Science. After identifying a few, I prioritized factors that mattered most to me, such as proximity to home, social atmosphere, and available opportunities. The University of Lincoln excelled in all these areas.

The campus itself was a major draw. It’s an amazing place that’s constantly growing and evolving. The vibrant and dynamic environment on campus made it an exciting place to study and live. Although my teachers encouraged me to consider prestigious universities like Cambridge or Oxford, I saw more value in what Lincoln had to offer. The unique combination of a supportive community, excellent facilities, and a welcoming city made it the perfect choice for me. While I didn’t receive specific recommendations during my initial search, once I discovered Lincoln, I was captivated by everything about it. The university aligned well with my personal and career goals at the time, even though these goals evolved during my studies. Initially, I aimed to become a CSI, but my interests and aspirations changed as I progressed through my course. Overall, the University of Lincoln provided an environment where I could grow both academically and personally, setting the stage for a successful career.

What was your favourite thing about being a student at the University of Lincoln (or one of its predecessor institutions)?: 

One of my favourite aspects of being a student at the University of Lincoln was the convenience and accessibility of the campus and city. Everything is on your doorstep, making it easy to navigate and enjoy university life. Additionally, Lincoln is a safe city, which contributed to my overall sense of security and well-being during my studies.

Academically, I found the short course on Digital Forensics particularly fascinating. This module sparked my interest in cyber security and played a significant role in shaping my career path. I also enjoyed studying fire and arson forensics, with a special interest in gunshot residue analysis, which resonated with my military background.

Socially, I was actively involved in the martial arts community at Lincoln. Joining a martial arts team allowed me to pursue my passion and explore various forms of martial arts, contributing to my physical and mental well-being. The sense of community and the friendships I made at Lincoln were invaluable. I formed lifelong friendships, one of which led to a business partnership.

Most importantly, I met my wife at Lincoln, and we both decided to stay in this wonderful city after graduating. I love the city of Lincoln itself. It’s stunning and not too big, which makes it less overwhelming compared to larger cities. The beautiful and historic surroundings provided a perfect backdrop for my university experience. Overall, my time at the University of Lincoln was marked by academic growth, personal development, and meaningful relationships. The supportive environment and the vibrant community made my university years truly memorable.
