What are you doing now you have graduated from the University of Lincoln?: Currently working as a Senior Journalist within the political newsgathering team in the BBC. Have previously worked for the BBC News Channel for a number of years – which I joined after a couple of years working in local BBC radio. I actually started freelancing for the BBC during the summer before my third year at university.
How did your time at the University of Lincoln support your career?: My time at Lincoln set me up for a career within the BBC by providing me with the fundamental skills of newsgathering. From operating cameras to picking the best news line, the skills gained on the Journalism course have proved invaluable – in fact I’ve help my colleagues with legal questions after completing my NCTJ at Lincoln.
What are the best parts of your job?: The best part of my job is never having FOMO. I’m always in the action. Whether it’s being on the steps of Downing Street during a Prime Minister’s resignation or helping to lead BBC News’ TV coverage of the King’s Coronation, there really is something different every day.
What inspired you to study at the University of Lincoln (or one of its predecessor institutions)?: I was inspired to study at Lincoln by the excellent on-campus facilities and the warmth and depth of knowledge of the lecturers. The city was a bonus – such a gem.
What was your favourite thing about being a student at the University of Lincoln (or one of its predecessor institutions)?: I loved the community in Lincoln – and miss it richly. I made, quite literally, friends for life. The safe and welcoming student community is unmatched. Also you can access campus anytime. Whether it’s pulling a late one to get an assessment submitted last minute, or getting up early to get ahead of the day, the library and newsrooms were always accessible 24/7.

What would you say to a prospective student thinking of applying to the University of Lincoln?: You’ll not regret it. Take every opportunity. It’s daunting at first, being away from home, but embed yourself in the student community and you’ll get the best start on your career.
If you could give our current students any top tip for after graduation and their careers, what would it be?: Start speaking to people now – make contacts and don’t be afraid of rejection. Those contact will be key for after graduating to getting your dream job. Also, your job straight out of uni might not be the perfect role, but see it as a step on the ladder to your goal.
