Full Name: Philip Roberts
Graduation Year: 2006
Course Studied: Media Production
Job Title: Director of Cinematic Services
Employer/Organisation Name: Crytek GmbH
What are you doing now you have graduated from the University of Lincoln?: I am directing the cinematic department at Crytek to create cinematic scenes for the latest Crytek games. Prior to this I have created over 850 video game trailers for over 60 video game titles across 3 triple A video game studios (Codemasters, EA, Crytek).
How did your time at the University of Lincoln support your career?: The University of Lincoln helped me, as a mature student, to move from a career as a script writer to an editor. The course opened doors to other training opportunities. The university teaching staff provided me with valuable feedback on practical and written assignments and encouraged me to push boundaries. The course also taught me to be responsible for delivering team and individual projects on time.
What are the best parts of your job?: I love everything about what I do. From team management, giving opportunities to fresh talent entering the industry, to developing a creative and social culture. To be working collaboratively in a creative environment is amazing. Every Friday I leave work looking forward to Monday morning.
What inspired you to study at the University of Lincoln (or one of its predecessor institutions)?: I lived in Lincoln and chose the university as a way of topping up my HND from Bournemouth Film School and to switch careers from Scriptwriting to Editing.
What was your favourite thing about being a student at the University of Lincoln (or one of its predecessor institutions)?: I loved being able to ask questions and expand my knowledge and practical skills.
If you could give our current students any top tip for after graduation and their careers, what would it be?: Networking is key. Build a good portfolio and share it with as many professionals as you can. Take all feedback as constructive and keep improving based on the advice you receive from professionals. Your University results will not only show a potential employ that you have the knowledge, but it will also show that you have delivered projects on time and have works well as part of a team.
