My Passion for Photography
Charlotte studied BA (Hons) Contemporary Lens Media and graduated in 2014. Find out more from her about her journey to becoming a Photographer.
At University I was always interested in Fashion Photography. I was aware this was a very hard career to progress in but I was determined to succeed. I started by shooting look books for local companies and building up a portfolio.
I spent a lot of my time working at The Odeon Lincoln after graduating, saving up money to spend on shoots for my portfolio. I also took on other photography jobs to gain as much experience as possible. In my second year of University, I was lucky enough to get chosen for a photography course with Nick Knight, which was an amazing opportunity to learn from one of the best in the industry. After that, I started freelancing with weddings and other photography gigs to build up my portfolio even more.
Eventually, I moved down to Dorset on my own working as the in-house photographer for Lush. This was so much fun as I got to work with a lot of interesting people as well as to learn about the environment. It was a very good experience working for a global company. I shot the website photography as well as events and products.
Lush cares a lot about the environment and only uses fresh, natural ingredients in their products. This was a great opportunity to learn more about product photography and how to style products for maximum effect. I also gained valuable experience working as part of a team in a fast-paced environment, especially working with such a large brand.
During my time at Lush, I was lucky enough to travel to many places including Amsterdam and Munich.
During the pandemic I fancied a change to work with a smaller company with a more creative direction – this brought me to my current job at Muc-Off.
Muc-Off is a much smaller company but they are doing big things in the motorbike and bike industry, expecially with the environment in mind. I am currently their in-house photographer and I absolutely love it. I get to travel to cool places, meet interesting people and of course, take photos of some badass bikes!
I would definitely recommend studying photography if you have a passion for it.
As a graduate, you will be at an advantage as most people want to help you. Have the confidence. Research what kind of photography you want to go into as this will make it easier for you when finding a job. After that, it’s all about networking and building up your portfolio. You need to show people what you can do in order to get more work. It may seem daunting but if you have a passion for it, you’ll get there in the end.
